Throughout the Gallatin Valley, businesses are tucked away in off-the-beaten path locations, businesses you may have never heard of. WHJ has discovered niche-market companies and gotten to know their respective owners. Essential Health provides functional medicine under the leadership of Dr. Todd Harris.
How is your practice different from traditional medicine?
Unlike conventional, Western-style medicine, our practice focuses on root causes and prevention. This means we seek to understand and alleviate the underlying issues affecting a patient’s health, then work to restore their health and protect their future wellbeing. We do this through a highly personalized and whole-body approach to care rooted in functional and integrative medicine.
When did you know that you wanted to go into this field and what motivated you?
After nearly 30 years in family medicine, I often observed Western medicine falling short for patients struggling with chronic illness. That recognition was my turning point. I was motivated to study functional and integrative medicine so I could uncover root causes, spend more time with patients, and use advanced therapies to help them achieve lasting wellness.

What services do you offer?
Our services range from annual wellness exams and chronic disease management to advanced diagnostics like hormone, metabolic, and nutritional testing. We also offer integrative therapies such as hormone replacement, peptide protocols, gut health support, and regenerative orthopedic treatments, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for joint and musculoskeletal healing. Looking ahead, we’re excited to expand into hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and extracorporeal blood oxygenation and ozonation (EBO2), which will give our patients even more tools for recovery, resilience, and longevity. Ultimately, our goal is to blend the best of conventional and functional medicine with innovative therapies so our patients can thrive at every stage of life.
What do you enjoy most about your line of work?
I love seeing the moment patients realize their symptoms can improve, and then supporting them as they build physical, mental, and emotional resilience. Every patient is unique and being able to use both conventional and innovative therapies to optimize wellness—and then track measurable progress—makes my work deeply rewarding. It reminds me why I wanted to be a doctor in the first place…can I make a difference in people’s lives?

Do you have any special certifications or specialties?
I’m board-certified in Family Medicine through the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), which means I’m trained to provide comprehensive primary care across all ages and conditions.
I also hold certification with the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine (ABAARM) and I’m a Fellow of Anti-Aging, Metabolic, and Functional Medicine (FAAMM).
What inspires you?
Seeing patients regain their health, confidence, and energy when they thought it might be impossible. Each success—whether it’s restoring balance, improving resilience, or preventing illness—reinforces why I do this work. Ultimately, it’s the opportunity to help people not just live, but thrive, that keeps me motivated every day.

How do you see your field changing in the next five to ten years?
Advances in genomics, metabolic and hormone testing, gut health, and regenerative therapies will allow us to tailor care to each individual’s biology, not just treat disease by population averages. Functional medicine and precision therapies will become increasingly integrated with conventional care, so patients can benefit from both evidence-based interventions and also innovative approaches that optimize longevity, resilience, and quality of life. I also expect technologies like hyperbaric oxygen, advanced peptide protocols, and regenerative orthopedics to become more mainstream, giving us new tools to enhance healing and recovery.
Describe your process—how do you work with patients?
Our process starts with an in-depth intake that can take up to four hours and labs resulting in 11 pages of data, including multiple inflammatory markers. From there, I collaborate with the patient to create a personalized plan that blends conventional medicine, functional strategies, and, when appropriate, regenerative therapies. I see myself as a partner in their health journey, providing education, support, and tools to help them achieve long-term vitality. Regular follow-ups allow us to track progress, adjust treatments, and celebrate meaningful improvements along the way.

Do you have a favorite sport or recreational activity, and what do you enjoy about it?
I just love a good game—whether it’s hockey, pickleball, or golf. What I enjoy most isn’t necessarily winning, but being in the moment, executing my skills, and embracing healthy competition. It keeps me engaged, focused, and energized, and I think that same energy and drive carry over into how I approach my work and life.
What do you enjoy most about living and working where you do?
What I enjoy most about living and working in Bozeman is the combination of natural beauty and a vibrant, authentic community. It’s clean, safe, and offers endless outdoor adventures, from hiking and skiing to exploring the mountains. I also love that people here are genuine and down-to-earth—it’s a place where life feels real and connected, not pretense-driven.
