Blood is the life force of the human body. It serves myriad roles that support the health and functioning of the body’s systems, organs, and cells. The body has evolved to detoxify blood through a process led primarily by the liver, kidneys, lungs, and sophisticated metabolic cellular activity. However, scientific advancements in functional medicine have paved the way for a new approach for optimizing cellular health by using a naturally occurring gas, ozone, which provides various therapeutic effects. A specialized protocol called Extracorporeal Blood Oxygenation and Ozonation Protocol (EBO2, or also known as EBOO) uses the power of ozone to support detoxification, healing, and ultimately, optimal health.
Commonly known for its role in the Earth’s atmosphere by shielding against harmful ultraviolet radiation, ozone also holds therapeutic properties that have been extensively studied and utilized for decades. In fact, therapy using ozone gas has been in medical use for over 100 years. Applying ozone to the body’s blood supply allows for an increase in delivery of oxygen to tissues, enhances cellular metabolism, and promotes detoxification processes. It can also stimulate the body’s immune system and healing mechanisms to combat various health issues. Additionally, ozone can play a key role in reducing inflammation and activating the body’s own antioxidant systems. EBO2 appears to be most beneficial for autoimmune conditions, chronic infections, heavy metal and mold toxicity, brain fog, fatigue, excess inflammation, and promoting longevity.
How does EBO2 work?
EBO2 is a minimally invasive procedure that saturates ozone into a large portion of the body’s blood supply to encourage a full-body approach to detoxification and healing. It was developed to treat a high volume of blood (5-7 liters) which provides a profoundly systemic impact on health. This advanced protocol is a combination of specialized blood filtration and mitochondrial stimulation with ozone and light therapy applied directly to the blood before returning the clean, energized blood to the body, like an oil change. This protocol filters the blood supply over 45 minutes setting it apart from most available ozone treatments, which simply remove a small amount of blood, add ozone to the blood, and return it. The filtration process is also unique to EBO2, as any cellular debris from the ozone application is removed prior to the blood being returned to the body, making the protocol more effective and better tolerated since body does not have to filter out these broken or dead cells on its own.
EBO2 is supportive for all inflammatory and autoimmune conditions as it aids the destruction and removal of inflammatory proteins, auto-antibodies, inflammatory cytokines, excess lipid cholesterol particles, and other harmful substances. In this way, it can be beneficial to anyone, as it provides general removal of inflammatory and toxic substances and supports disease-specific situation like cardiovascular disease or autoimmune diseases.
What can I expect during an EBO2 protocol?
A patient interested in EBO2 would start by meeting with an expertly trained provider to review the benefits and risks and determine eligibility. (At Essential Health, a full Wellness Consult is recommended, but not required, prior to beginning an EBO2 protocol). If eligible, a patient will be sent home with a kit with electrolytes and targeted supplements to aid blood flow and limit side effects. They are instructed to avoid heavy detoxification ahead of the protocol, as well as heavy toxification (e.g. consuming alcohol). Before EBO2, a patient should eat a good breakfast and lunch with at least 50g of carbs total to prevent low blood sugar during the protocol which can happen due to the heavy mitochondrial stimulation and energy production. The protocol should also be run by highly skilled nurses and supervised by an onsite medical provider.
During an EBO2 protocol, a specialized BPA- and DEHP-free dialysis filter is used to remove lipids, cholesterol, heavy metals, petroleum products, free radicals, toxins (bound to beta-2 microglobulin), and inflammatory proteins from the body, making it highly effective at halting the inflammatory cycle. As blood passes through the filter, it is brought into contact with ozone which optimizes the filtration process, stimulates the NrF2 detoxification pathway, increases nitric oxide, and accelerates mitochondria via increasing NAD+ and ATP. Lastly, the “clean” blood is passed through a hemealumination device which uses UVA, UVC, red, green, amber, and blue lights to further impede viruses and bacteria, energize mitochondria, and activate NAD+.
After an EBO2 protocol, a patient can expect to feel reenergized, clear and vibrant, with a reduction in symptoms of inflammation or specific ailments and an improved immune system. For most clinical applications, the protocol recommends one treatment per week for 3 weeks, with less sessions required for overall wellness and optimization.
Monitoring and safety
Proper medical supervision and adherence to established protocols are essential to minimize risks and optimize therapeutic outcomes. While EBO2 therapy is generally considered safe when administered by a trained healthcare professional, certain precautions should be taken.
EBO2 protocols should only be applied to eligible patients with careful consideration from an expert provider of a patient’s health history, symptoms, and lifestyle. Throughout the procedure, the patient’s vitals and any signs of complications are closely monitored to ensure safety and efficacy.
EBO2 therapy is a powerful approach to addressing a wide range of health conditions and improving overall health. This advanced and exclusive treatment can be life-changing for patients who struggle with autoimmune conditions, mold toxicity, fatigue, chronic pain, or who simply want to optimize their health even further. It also paves the way for other therapies to develop that combine advanced technology and science with a common sense, root cause approach to care.
